Febrile Convulsions

Note

Febrile convulsions can be frightening but Do Not lead to further health problems and will generally finish without treatment

Febrile Convulsions

  • Are triggered by fever and tend to accompany common childhood illnesses such as the flu, a cold or an ear infection
  • They are generally brief and will not last more than 5 minutes

Signs and Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Difficulty breathing
  • May be a bluish tinge to the lips and face
  • Muscular contractions of the limbs, face and trunk

Treatment

During Convulsions

  • Put the child on the floor to prevent injury
  • Position them on their stomach or side to prevent choking
  • Do not hold or restrain the child during convulsions
