Shock

Remember To Send for Help – Call an Ambulance

 

Note

A shock state is when a person is not getting enough blood or oxygen to their organs; this may be the result of trauma, blood loss, poisoning, allergic reactions, severe burns, heat stroke, or other causes.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Cool, clammy skin
  • Pale or ashen skin
  • Rapid pulse
  • Rapid breathing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

Treatment

  • Manage any injuries
  • Place the patient flat on the floor and raise their legs (unless this may cause further injury or pain)
  • Loosen any tight clothing to help blood circulation
  • Keep the patient warm with a blanket (not direct heat)
  • If the patient begins to vomit, has difficulty breathing or becomes unconscious, place them in the recovery position
  • Seek medical assistance
