
Ko Un was born in Kunsan. Disillusioned by the Korean War, he became a Buddhist monk, achieved fame in the ranks of the Buddhist clergy, and caused a major shock when he resigned in 1962. Militant nationalist, proponent of civil rights, a key figure in the democracy movement, he was jailed several times for his beliefs.
