Born in North Ch’ungch’ong Province, studied English at Kyoto University, Chong Chiyong, was a towering literary figure in the 1930s; his poems are in the symbolist-imagist mode. He disappeared north in mysterious circumstances at the beginning of the war and was only rehabilitated late in the 1980s.
