When the shrapnel of the war
exploded
scattering like the wounded
in an exotic market
loaded
with a surprising enemy
it was a picture of you
that carried me to safety
When all hope
was torn away
by a gang of wind
even as the knives of rain
were slashing rivers of experience
across my body
it was the promise of home
that kept me dry
and even though I am still lying
in a different section of the world
staring into a dirty hospital mirror
I haven’t given up dreaming
waiting for the day that we can stand together
in the reflection
I guess, for now, it is enough just to know that you are out there
your love is healing to this helpless victim
coming home to you will be my salvation
