Chapter 24

THE NEW SWINGTON ESTATE

1100HRS

[Night passes and morning arrives. Despite the earlier incident, most

Swingtonites are awake]

MARION HORACE

[shakes her sleeping husband awake]

Guess what?

JAMES HORACE

What? Another kerfuffle?

MARION HORACE

Silly. No. It is sunny today. Rise and shine.

JAMES HORACE

Fantastic. I am feeling better already.

SIMON SENECA

[snoring]

* * *

JOHN KNOWS

It is good to have the sun shine in these dark days. The little wins. I need

to find out from Strauss what that was all about.

* * *

HARRY AND JOSEPHINE MOTLEY

[jogging, they pass by Dak Rundy’s lawn. Dak Rundy is seated on his

porch]

[in unison]

Morning Dak.

DAK RUNDY

Morning Harry, Morning Josephine

[mutters as they pass by]

Wankers.

* * *

[Noise erupts from the living room. The TV is on. A sports broadcast

comes on. Sally and David are still in bed]

SALLY MABRAT

HOOPTE GOBBLEDYGOOK

I guess he arrived at Damascus.

DAVID PABRAT

I will set him straight. In time.

JOJI KOJIMA

[wakes up with a start, grabs the alarm clock]

Oh shit!

* * *

SARAH DJIMON

[on her way to the estate caretaker’s office she glimpse at the gate and

sees multiple police vehicles parked on the settlement side]

God, I hope they are arresting the whole lot of them.

* * *

LEAH KAPALDI

[speaking from the kitchen]

Your breakfast will grow cold babe.

ERIC KAPALDI

[speaking from the bedroom]

You know I had this funny dream. I dreamt that the settlement was up

in smoke and that there were firetrucks all over the place.

LEAH KAPALDI

I didn’t dream anything.

ERIC KAPALDI

I guess it was my way of imagining someone angry enough to have

torched the place up after what happened.

LEAH KAPALDI

And who would be crazy enough to do such a thing?

JOE SMOCKER

What is the opposite of good morning Lenny?

LENNY SMOCKER

Bad morning, I guess?

JOE SMOCKER

Sounds too easy. You mean you didn’t find a better answer in your

Thesaurus, Lenny?

LENNY SMOCKER

Will you let me be? I am stymied.

JOE SMOCKER

Bad morning, Lenny.

LENNY SMOCKER

HOOPTE GOBBLEDYGOOK

Well thanks brother.

JOE SMOCKER

You have a burning problem, you know that.

LENNY SMOCKER

I don’t have a burning problem, I just like burning. No problem.

JOE SMOCKER

You are crazy. No more crazy ideas.

LENNY SMOCKER

[Ruffles his hair, breaks into a smile]

Well, it is still a good idea. Will keep it for future use. It is a matter of

honour. We cannot let a good idea go to waste.

JOE SMOCKER

Is there something I should know about you, Lenny?

LENNY SMOCKER

[throws a wide grin]

I love the smell of gasoline in the morning…

CAIN MISON

Hey Mars. How is it going?

MARS ANON

Same old. Same old.

You look like shit, what happened to you bruh?

CAIN MISON

I haven’t slept for a while now. It didn’t help that those goddam

immigrants kept me awake the whole night with their goddam

excruciating noises.

MARS ANON

What excruciating noises?
